I'm a fan of the Avernum series and even had the opportunity to beta test once. I'm about 1/3 of the way through Avernum 6 and enjoy it quite a bit. I agree that the graphics could be at least a little better.
The storyline and characters are fun as always. And I'm a HUGE fan of hitting every little quest I can find, which Avernum delivers. Power gaming is right! Upgrading the graphics, even just a little, would have been appreciated.. but I'm still playing :) The huge demos are great. I will say that Vogel's games have been the only shareware I actually happily paid for, even when I was a poorish college student.

I played through the Avernum 6 demo, and can testify to it being a fun game, due mostly to the above-average writing (which is tragically missing from so many games there days.)

However, in my opinion, Spiderweb is being a bit ambitious asking $28 for this. There's plenty of well-written (and technologically similar) abandonware I can get for free. I would probably pay $10. Until the price drops, I'll pass on the full Avernum 6 experience.

Speaking as a longtime fan of the Avernum series, my favorite part of the games is opportunity for POWERGAMING! My first run through is always an experiment, to probe the limits of the engine. Then I try to finish the game with 3 people, then 2, and finally with only one player (at this point you might need to use a few cheats at critical moments, like when your warrior needs to dispel a magic barrier!) Don't be fooled by the simple combat system, there are a lot of very interesting combinations, and when you figure out how to unlock some advanced skills, you can make some interesting theme characters.

That being said, I hope that the animations are improved a little in their new series.
