Back to Back: indie RPGs to fund

From our last back to back, Project Phoenix , Steel and Steam Episode 1, AdventurOS and Sword ‘n’ Board hit their funding goals. Valgard’s Fate, unfortunately, was evidently not fated to succeed.

Here is the newest crop of games seeking funding–and an unexpectedly numerous one, too:

  • Ambrov X — a fully-voiced 3D sci-fi action RPG. It reminds me just a smidge of Mass Effect. I think Ambrov X looks rather promising, but it has quite a ways to go if it’s going to hit its $500,000 funding goal in the next 15 days.
  • Aurion : Legacy of the Kori-Odan — A 2D RPG with an interesting African aesthetic. Unfortunately, the game is less than 2% funded with only 10 days left on the clock.
  • Cedaria: Blackout — A 3D adventure RPG set in a Middle Eastern steampunk setting. There’s a lot of talk about the setting, but almost no discussion of the game’s systems; I still have no idea how this is supposed to play or what mechanics it will feature.
  • Data Hacker: Corruption — if this sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the follow-up to Data Hacker: Initiation (which was successfully funded back at the start of the year). As with the first game, this is a 2D cyberpunk jRPG. There is a free demo available for Windows.
  • Hyper Light Drifter — a 2D Zelda-alike in an unsettling sci-fi setting. There’s some really striking and well-done visual art on this one, and Beau Blyth of Samurai Gunn fame is doing the programming.
  • Magic Meisters — a 3D open world action RPG with a really cartoony art style. The devs list Zelda and Skyrim as influences.
  • MIDRAIN — a cyberpunk choose-your-own-adventure-style RPG. The main thing that seems to distinguish this from a Choice of Games title is the fact that the various scenes are illustrated in a comic book style. This project has 15 days to raise $15,000.
  • Night Job — a noir 2D jRPG with a black-and-white aesthetic and rotoscoped 2D animated cut scenes. This one looks fairly interesting, and has a thoroughly modest $6,500 funding goal.
  • Tales of Terrene: Book One — a 3D Diablo-alike. The campaign features a weird mix of slick and sloppy. The pitch video has really high production values, but cuts off randomly at the end; they misspell “Baldur’s Gate” in the description; there is an alpha demo, but the page says it is “Temporarily Offline”; and although the pitch video refers to Dolby 7.1 sound and states that the game is being made “in association with Dolby Laboratories,” the actual page text says the game will have “Dolby inspired 7.1 sound channels.” Something about it just seems a little…off, somehow.
  • The Rescue of Amberlina — a 2D RPG Maker jRPG. The game features class selection, mouse support, a pet system and the ability to own a shop.
  • Tiny Kingdoms — from what I can tell, this is basically Bonfire with a PvP multiplayer mode and a few different mechanics (e.g. no randomized quests, but has pets and terrain effects).
