File this one under “New to Me”: last year, Aldorlea Games released an RPG Maker jRPG by the name of Dreamscape. Today, you can read a new, short review of the the game up on DarkStarMatryx, in which the reviewer describes Dreamscape as reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. (Insofar as the game’s premise involves delving through other peoples’ minds, it reminds me of Chocobo’s Dungeon.) A snippet from the review:

You will jump into the dreams of people you meet and can exit the way you came in or jump into the dream of another person you meet or person within your party. This allows a lot of back and forth into different landscapes, something you will need to do to advance farther in certain realms. You won’t be worrying about random monsters though, they appear on the screen for you to avoid or confront depending on you.

An interesting aspect that adds some difficulty to the game is the lack of a healing item inventory. Within the dreams you will find food of all sorts that will heal your party. Certain characters more than others depending on the food type. The true kicker is once you pick it up it is used immediately and removed from the map. So you need to use them sparingly and make sure it is the right item for the character needing healed most. There is a bit of a safety net as far as healing goes. You can use a fairy that appears near where you start, at a cost. If she heals your party the dreamworlds will react and make the game more difficult. So using her can be more headache than help.

Additionally, here’s an interview Adam Ames of TruePCGaming did with Indinera (the owner of Aldorlea Games). They don’t talk too much about the game itself there, though Indinera does mention that Dreamscape is more puzzle-focused than his usual fare.

Aldorlea Games describes the game like so:

Marine and her friends have six days to find the four remaining warriors and make it to the showdown!
With such tight schedule and dramatic events piling up, Marine’s nerves are all over the place.
But Jeanne the tiny fairy is back! And this alone helps even the balance!

Millennium 4 is the most suspenseful, thrilling and emotional Millennium installment so far!

25+ secret rooms!
25+ quests!
20+ hours of gameplay!
Battle superb monsters including 9 Animal Kings!
Awesome production values

Below are some screenshots, presumably representative of the aforementioned awesome production values. The game sells for $13.99, but in case you need more convincing, you can download a demo right here.

Don’t ask me how they managed this, but Aldorlea Games has just released a new RPG less than a week after the release of their last RPG. This latest one is called Millennium 3: Cry Wolf. Here is what it’s about:

Marine and her friends are back!
Time is running out for the showdown and the Lords of Mystrock are nastier than ever – but Marine has other priorities!
She has to explore the Eastern part of the world with the hope to find new warriors! But little does she know that she is going to be sidetracked in order to help some of her friends!
What will happen next? Will Jeanne be back? Is Bokden still as elusive as ever? Play and find out!

Millennium 3 is the latest installment of the award-winning Millennium series, featuring 40 quests, 32 secret rooms, up to 11 animals kings and a whooping 20-30 hours of gameplay!

I was sort of intrigued by the “award-winning” moniker on this. After looking into it, it turns out that the first entry in this series (Millennium: A New Hope) was apparently “voted RPG of the Year by RPGFan.” I say “apparently” because I can’t seem to find confirmation of this on the RPGFan website. They did have this to say about it, though: “a pretty decent beginning to an RPG saga with a lot of potential.” Anyone feel like doing some digging on this?

EDIT: Aldorlea provides the link, and informs me that Jade’s Journey is, in fact, not their game, but rather a game from an affiliate of theirs by the name of Warfare Studios. Good to know.

In the meantime, I’d post the trailer they have up on the Millennium 3 page, but it seems to consist entirely of footage from Millennium 2 (which IMHO kind of defeats the purpose). So here, have some screenshots:

I thought of spicing up your waiting time for Millennium’s next chapter and give you all a chance to win a copy of the game in an Aldorlean version of Trick-or-treating. Ehehe!!!

The Treat is obvious – a free copy of MM3!

The Trick… well you’ll need to correctly answer a few questions. Every week I’ll post a batch of questions. For each correct answer you’ll score a point (if a question requires more than one answer it’ll be one point for each).
At the end of the contest the member with highest score will win a copy of the game.
In case of ex-aequo, the winner will be randomly drawn among those with the highest number of points.
The points you accumulate will also be added to your clan so even if you don’t win the game you may considerably boost your clan’s chances of winning the Trophy for Highest Points.

Check the thread for more details.

Jay Barnson has published his second interview with Indinera Falls, creator of the prolific indie game studio Aldorlea Games.

Rampant Coyote: There are a lot of fantastic big-budget mainstream RPGs out now – with more coming soon with plenty of marketing hype for each one. You’d think that there wouldn’t be any room for a small-budget, 2D RPG like yours, but – from what I can tell – the audience for these tiny indie games keeps growing. Would you agree? If so, what do you think accounts for it?

Indinera Falls: I think those audiences are different. Games like mine cater to people who like 16-bits types of RPG, back in the days of the Genesis and Super NES.

Those games happen to be my favorite too. While there are obviously fewer people interested in this sub-genre, those who like them won’t get them in the big budget stuff, and that’s where we come into play. Also, I believe indie makers for the most part have more genuine stories, with less marketing constraint and editor’s control.

The full interview is here. There is also an interview from one year ago archived here.
